Live long and prosper.

To celebrate the life and career of our favorite alien scientist, here are some of my favorite excerpts from Leonard Nimoy's first memoir published in 1975, I AM NOT SPOCK (a very misleading titled, for it is clear he loved that green-blooded Vulcan).
RIP, Mr. Spock...
I am not Spock.
Then why does my head turn in response to a stranger on the street who calls out that name? Why do I feel a twinge when someone says, "What happened to your ears?"
I am not Spock. Then why do I feel a wonderful warmth when I hear or read a compliment aimed at the Vulcan?
Spock for President reads the bumper sticker on teh car in front of me. I'm filled with pride and I smile...
Recently I sat with a group of actors I'd just met... As I was leaving one of the actresses said, "Leonard, we love you." I smiled and I was warmed. I said, "Thank you" but I wanted to add, "I'll tell him when I see him."
She loves Spock! I know it! I'm sure of it!...
That's nice. More than nice, it's wonderful. But standing silently behind my shoulder is a very jealous, ever-present Vulcan!!

SPOCK: Tell her I accept her compliment, emotional though it may be.
NIMOY: What compliment?
SPOCK: She said they love me.
NIMOY: That is not what she said. She specifically said, "Leonard, we love you." And I know there's nothing wrong with your hearing!
SPOCK: If you're so certain of her intent, why are you becoming agitated?
NIMOY: That's ridiculous. Every time I'm paid a compliment you grab it away. You grab it up for yourself!
SPOCK: Would she have paid you that compliment if not for me?
NIMOY: No!
SPOCK: Then how can you claim it for your own?

Sometimes I'll get on airplane and somebody'll flash me the Vulcan salute. Or some nice lady will ask for my autograph and I'll proudly sign "Leonard Nimoy," and then she'll say, "Please sign it Mr. Spock. That's the way my son knows you."
Sometimes I get tired of the struggle and I simply sign, Spock. I tell myself it's faster. It's only five letters instead of twelve. But who am I kidding? No one. I do it because the look in this particular child's eyes says, "I love you, Mr. Spock" and I know that if I signed any other name, two people would be cheated: The child and Spock, and I can't do that. I don't want to hurt that child, and I must be fair to the Vulcan. I think he would do that same for me.

And this is made of just too much awesome to not share...

Where, oh where, has Ophelia been. . .

So it's been about a month since I've blogged. It's summer, it's so blooming hot in Texas, and I just haven't been in a bloggy kind of mood. I'm sure you know how that goes. That's not to say I haven't been meaningfully occupied (as "I am very busy and important," to quote Bridget Jones).

Here are some of the fun things I've been up to:

I organized my iTunes library (more on that later).

I went through two edit passes on my upcoming NA (new adult) novel: Definitely, Maybe in Love (MUCH more on that later).

I started writing a new story--which I plan on finishing this week before my writers' group.

I've been listening to Sara Bareilles's new record The Blessed Unrest pretty much nonstop.

I swam a bit, bought a new patio chair, got a nice tan, talked to my mother several time, hmm, what else...? Oh, yeah, I made soup. Twice.

I've been drinking this:

I've been doing a lot of fun novel reading:

Matched - Ally Condie
Where We Belong - Emily Giffin
The Summer I Became a Nerd - Leah Rae Miller
The Ocean at the End of the Lane- Neil Gaiman
Losing It- Cora Carmack
Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
Billy & Me - Giovanna Fletcher

But most of all, I've been doing some pretty major vegging out. Meaning, I've watched a butt-load of TV and movies. For example, I caught this flick:

And then went home and watched this one...

This one:

Oh, and then I had a Star Trek weekend. Check it out...I watched the first (new) movie, the new-new movie...

Star Trek II - Khan, III - Lookin' for Spock, IV - the whale one....

And then the first TEN episodes of this:

So yeah, for the most part, I had a very productive month. But now it's back to the "real life" of writing and blogging and not sleeping. Hooray!

Hey there, Khan.

Annette Funicello...I'll miss you

When I was a kid, we got the Disney Channel when it was brand new. It didn't have any "new" programming yet, so it showed the old stuff. I remember running home from school to watch the B&W Mickey Mouse Club.

Of course Annette was my favorite.

And the classic Disney movies were the BEST. She was so darling in Babes in Toyland and The Shaggy Dog. And don't get me started on Beach Blanket Bingo. (Wasn't Frankie such a babe?)

Let's rock out once more with Annette and Tommy:

And lets not forget...

We'll miss you, sweet Annette. Say hi to Jimmy from me!

Happy Friday!
Every day is better with a little Johnny Depp, don't you think?

Pretty woman. . . are a wonder.

Pretty woman. . . stay within you.

Pretty woman. . . blowing out their candles, combing out their hair. Even when they leave, they still are there. They're there!

Pretty woman. . .how they make a man sing.

Marilyn

Happy Birthday, pretty lady.

If you've never seen Mare in action, check her out in my favorite, The Prince and the Showgirl, along side Laurence Olivier. Classic movie magic!

"You know what's going to happen? I'm going to fall in love with you. Because I always, always do."
"Always?"
"Mm-hmm. Both times. So you better watch out. You better watch out!"

Z is for Zed.

As in, the last letter in the English alphabet.
As in, done, complete, over.
Job well done, in fact.
As in, "Zed is dead, baby. Zed's dead."

Pulp Fiction. Movie: yuck. Soundtrack: epic
listen: here, here & here

Thanks for a month of fun, A - Z Challenge. And.....goodnight.

N is for (The) Neverending Story

Not!
But stick with me....

The Neverending Story (along with The Dark Crystal, The Flight of the Navigator, and The Boy Who Could Fly) were my sister's favorite movies when she was a little kid.

Let me tell you about my sister.

She's awesome
And tough and funny
She sings like a bird and drives faster then me. She's always had better hair (except when she selfishly volunteers as guinea pig to her friends going through cosmetology school....perms are seldom a good look, sister)
Me & my bestie, doing what we do best,
I gave her The Corrs, she gave me The Backstreet Boys
I gave her Downton Abbey, she gave me Veronica Mars
I gave her Twilight, she gave me Katie Fforde
I gave her The Pimpernel, she gave me Star Wars
We discovered Monty Python, The Marx Brothers and Robert Downy, Jr together
We share love-custody of Gilbert Blythe and Gerard Butler
She gave me Brad Pitt
She understands my fascination (and borderline obsession) of Deb, Ang and Jen
Even though I don't quite get her enthusiasm for alternative rock and ska
We share a fear of circus freaks and a love for all-you-can-eat buffets and Brit Coms
We're both going to marry Jedi Knights someday
And Mr. Big

We shared a room in college for one summer and spend those hot nights trying to sleep while cooking up alternate endings to Phantom of the Opera and "What was Mr Darcy really thinking..." scenarios.

Nicknames:
(Seinfeld) she calls me "Gammy," I call her "Mulva."
(Gossip Girl) she calls me "Em," I call her "Es."
(Ab Fab) we both answer to "Pats"

I love you mucho, sister! Enjoy your "Day of N." And I'll allow you....THIS TIME, to watch one of your crap movies.

I'll see you in California tomorrow!!!
ex-oh, ex-oh.

H is for Harvey

Let's take a moment to celebrate everyone's favorite "pooka," that six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch invisible white rabbit, Harvey.

All these marvelous word were written by Mary Chase (play & screenplay):

"Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be' – she always called me Elwood – 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me."

"'You have the advantage on me. You know my name and I don't know yours.' And, and right back at me he said, 'What name do you like?' Well, I didn't even have to think twice about that. Harvey's always been my favorite name. So I said to him, I said, 'Harvey.' And, uh, this is the interesting thing about the whole thing: He said, 'What a coincidence. My name happens to be Harvey.'"

"I always have a wonderful time, wherever I am, whomever I'm with."

Clicky HERE for a wee taste of this charming Hollywood classic, which also happens to be my father's favorite movie.
